One day I received a call, as a part of my online counselling session. That was the voice of a woman; stress, anxiety, and depression were very in her voice. She said she was suffering through terrible mood swings, not able to conceive, and has weight issues, gets bullied and mocked for her weight issues and appearance. Also experiencing a lot of depression and stress due to all this. She was Namita. My client for the next few months. For some reason, I couldn’t dismiss her as a case of regular stress/ anxiety / depression.

I felt there is something much beyond that, and a much deeper issue to be dealt with. As I did my further investigation, I found that she was suffering PCOD!! YES PCOD…. A lifetime issue to deal with and to live with!! as PCOD has no cure!!

Well, coming to the point, Namita was suffering from PCOD since she was 15 years old. Having irregular menses; she was overweight than her peers. She was constantly bullied for that, and she was a matter of joke amongst her classmates. Her confidence levels hit rock bottom. She was nervous and depressed for most of the time since then. Now she was a woman in her 30’s, married, and had a problem with conceiving, and was going through terrible mood swings, that was affecting her married life. All these issues added to the woes!! So in short, PCOD brings in a package of problems along with it.

Now, let’s look at what PCOD is:

“PCOD (POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME) is a hormonal disorder, causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges”

The cause of PCOD is yet to be understood completely by the medical fraternity. But it is assumed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is a condition that affects a woman’s hormonal levels, thus disrupting her productive (childbearing years i.e. 15 to 44 yrs.) years.

What is pcod

PCOD hinders the menstrual cycle of a woman. It becomes irregular and thus makes it difficult for a woman to conceive. As per statistics, 70 percent of women suffer from PCOD and still, their condition goes undiagnosed and unnoticed.

PCOD affects the ovaries of a woman and reproductive organs that produce estrogen and progesterone. These are the hormones that relate to the menstrual cycle in a woman. In simple words, PCOD hampers the whole process of releasing the mature egg from the ovaries, during the ovulation period, which is further fertilized by the sperm.

When a woman is suffering PCOD/PCOS small fluid-filled sacs grow inside her ovaries. These sacs contain immature eggs. But they never mature during the process of ovulation. And hence they remain there. This forms a cyst there. And the immature eggs accumulate there as they are not ripe enough to slip down during ovulation and get fertilized by the sperm during mating.

PCOD/PCOS shows some symptoms:

  • Cysts in the ovaries
  • Production of high levels of male hormones
  • Disruption or less release of female hormone or say it as a hormonal imbalance
  • Irregular menses
  • Excessive weight gain
  • Excessive facial and body hair growth like men, due to excessive releasing of androgen (male hormone)
  • Severe acne
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Abnormally heavy periods or no periods
  • Terrible MOOD SWINGS

When to see a doctor

Generally, PCOD will show at least any of the 3 above symptoms. If a woman is facing issues like infertility, weight gain, irregular periods, and other hormonal symptoms then one should take a call immediately.

During my counselling sessions, many women tell me that they tried almost every available stream of medicines (allopathy, homeopathy, and Ayurveda) but they discontinued the treatment as they were not getting the desired results. But this further worsened their situation. Other psychological issues like mood swings, stress, anxiety, and depression left unattended. this practically made them feel lower, and they suffered low self-esteem. This caused eating disorders.
