Abuse

Abuse is often referred to as improper treatment or behaviour in order to gain benefit. Abuse can be present in any form - it can be emotional, mental, physical and even sexual in relationships, marriage, domestic life, between married couples, in schools, workplaces and other areas of life.

The abuser used his power to dominate or gain control over the victim. It is true that sometimes it takes very long to even recognise that you are a victim of abuse and this has a very strong negative impact in your life. In later stages of life it can develop serious trust, low esteem, depression and in some extreme cases even suicidal tendencies. Therefore, if you are in an abusive relationship, can read the subtle signs or know someone who is being abused in family, work life or friends circle, it is very important to seek help from a certified counsellor.

When you develop psychological and physical dependence on substances, drug, any activity like smoking, sex, work, gambling, exercise and shopping, it is called addiction.

With time, when their addiction starts taking over their life, it leads to distorted thinking, life threatening behaviour and bodily functions. Studies have shown that long term substance abuse can lead to poor judgements, decision making learning, memory and behaviour control. But with the help of a certified counsellor, one can receive a long term effective treatment for their addictions and lead productive life.

It is also seen that people with addiction are also aware of their problems and unable to stop it because there have been chemical changes in the brain that just cannot stop the urge to use of the substance and become the cause of many preventable illnesses and premature deaths. So, the first step to treating any kind of addiction is to recognise it and seek help for an addiction counselling expert. Your counsellor will suggest your best therapeutic treatment, hospitalisation if necessary and the best outpatient program.

Anger management

It is very important to control anger before it controls you. While on one hand, anger is a very normal and healthy emotion but like any emotion - it is conveying a message that the situation is upsetting, unjust and even threatening.

And, if you are dealing with chronic anger, and usually express it in a way it harms yourself or others. And the truth is that anger does more damage to yourself than others. You might think that venting your anger is all healthy but only if your anger is justified.

So, if you think you have uncontrollable anger issues then, speak to a certified anger management counsellor who will treat your fury with psycho-therapeutic programs that are specially designed for anger management. The therapist will sit and talk to you and identify your self-defeating negative thoughts that flares up your anger.

Bereavement and loss

Bereavement and loss counselling is typically done on children and adults alike to overcome a major change such as loss of loved ones in their life. The major job of a grief counsellor is to comfort a grieving person by understanding and listening when they avoid people out of shame and awkwardness.

While different people handle loss in different ways, there is no particular set stage and requires help when the person thinks there is no meaning to life without the existence of the lost loved one.

And, guilt can be a real problem in overcoming grief over loss because we tend to blame ourselves. Stress

Stress is your body’s way of responding to any threat. It is normal that when you sense danger - whether real or imagined - your body gets into defence and generates an automatic response of flight-or-fight, which is often referred to as a stress response.

Stress in an adequate amount keeps you focussed, energetic and alert. But if it rises to unimaginable levels when you get so used to it that you start to feel that it is the normal response - this is where it starts affecting you negatively. It takes a heavy toll on you.

Your counsellor can help you read the common warning signs and symptoms of stress overload.
